I had my first appointment with Dr. Comite early last summer, several months after my husband Curtis started Dr. Comite’s program. The changes I had observed in Curtis - he felt better, he looked healthier, and his energy level increased significantly – were exactly what I needed. My immediate goal was to combat the exhaustion that resulted from a busy year supervising Guardian Angels administration, staff development and fundraising, including spearheading the organization’s 13th Annual Gala, a major event which drew over 500 attendees. I visited Dr. Comite soon after the Gala, hoping that she would provide the needed “pick me up.” What I learned under Dr. Comite’s care was that exhaustion played but a small role in how I’d been feeling, and what I needed was more than a simple pick-me-up.
Apart from exhaustion, I had assumed that my health was good. I was therefore quite surprised, following Dr. Comite’s extensive diagnosis, to learn that my body was NOT doing fine even though I thought it was. My blood tests indicated, among other things, an unhealthy cholesterol level and high risk for heart disease, depleted hormones and a dangerously high insulin level. My biggest concern was the insulin level. I was, essentially, pre-diabetic. Dr. Comite’s immediate words to me were “Diabetes: we’re not going to let it happen.” And she was as good as her word.
I was not “sick,” but I was on the road to being sick. And Dr. Comite is committed to treating individuals precisely where I was on the health continuum: BEFORE they get sick. Her goal is to have all of us pay attention to our bodies before disaster strikes. Under Dr. Comite’s patient tutelage I learned a simple fact of life: critical elements in our body, especially hormones, deplete as we age. Slowly but surely, and certainly after 40, aging takes its toll. I had seen some signs, felt some pains, slowed down somewhat. I recognized that I was no longer 20. What I did not understand until my work with Dr. Comite was that there is a difference between healthy aging and unhealthy aging. The difference is real, the difference is measurable, and it has been thrilling to cross the divide.
Within 8 months I reversed my declining health patterns by changing eating and exercise patterns, and by commencing bioidentical hormone optimization, something I was initially apprehensive about. Media information overload on the subject did not make researching it easy. Dr. Comite, however, provided factual information, summarized the research and explained the role of hormones and hormone optimization in healthy aging. By the time I completed the lesson I was ready to begin the program. I am now more energetic than I’ve been in decades, my skin and hair look and are healthier, I have lost weight in the right places (in particular, the post-partum mid-waist thickness that I thought would be a part of me forever), and have received perhaps the greatest gift: my intellectual stamina and acuity have returned to what they were when I was at the top of my game.
In pursuit of better health over the years, I have combed health food stores, taken vitamins, worked with herbalists. I can state categorically that nothing, NOTHING has made me feel as good as the program that Dr. Comite and exercise physiologist Steven Villagomez have designed and that I’ve implemented.
